What is Anhidrosis and What are the Signs to Look for?
Anhidrosis in horses is known to be a partial or a complete inability to sweat, also known as "drycoat." Anhidrosis is of particular concern in areas that get extremely hot for horses in heavy work. The lack of the body's ability to sweat can be very harmful and cause a decrease in the horse's performance, recovery rate and tolerance to exercise. Common signs, besides a lack of sweat, are elevated body temperature, increased respiratory rate and dilated nostrils. Tips to help manage horses diagnosed with Anhidrosis include getting them into a climate-controlled environment, reducing work load and providing supplementation support with a formula containing electrolytes.
Horse Health Tip
When Should I Supplement My Horse with Electrolytes?
Electrolyte supplementation should be considered during times of extreme weather to encourage your horse to hydrate. It's also important to replenish electrolytes lost during heavy exercise or shipping in hot weather to main- tain a healthy electrolyte balance. Additional electrolyte supplementation can also be beneficial to help support the body's ability to sweat to help maintain a healthy body temperature.
